Robert's first appearance on the census was in 1881, where he appears aged 7 months old with his parents living along the High Street of Wicken. He remained in Wicken working in agriculture for many years.

In 1901, Robert is noted as one of three Horse Keepers on the farm of farm bailiff Daniel Norman, in March, Cambridgeshire. By the time of the 1911 census he is noted as a 'labourer', which he appears as again in 1924 at the marriage of his daughter Elsie.

Robert married Dorcas Hawes, and the couple settled down to become parents of six children. Sadly, their oldest son Robert died of Spanish Flu when he was 12 years old at the end of the First World War. His infant sister Nellie also died, aged 2 years in 1915, but her cause of death is not yet known.

Dorcas pre-deceased Robert by 22 years, when she died on Christmas Day 1949 aged 67 years.
