The Family Tree

Sarah Bowers
1841-1920

Sarah Bowers was the sixth of the eight children of Henry Bowers and his wife Ann Bailey of Wicken. She married George Farby of Little Thetford but the couple did not have any children on their own. When her younger sister Ann died, it left her husband James Simpson Bishop to look after a young family. So Sarah and her husband helped to look after the children and earned themselves the affectionate title of "Grandad and Granny Farby".

"Granny" Farby was most fondly remembered by my Gt. Grandmother who recalled the great times that she and her sister would have when they visited them on their produce stall on the Cambridge market. "Granny" Farby would make butter for the students and charge them 1d (one penny) per inch (25.4mm). At lunch they would all sit down on upturned baskets and eat their lunch which was brought to them from "The Temperance Hotel" and normally consisted of a meat pie.

Both Sarah and George were remembered very fondly for their kindness shown to their nieces and nephews and their children in turn.
