Ann Gilbert
(1838-1916)

Ann Gilbert (later Ann Drake) was the eighth of the twelve children of William Gilbert and his wife Elizabeth Brightley of Littleport, Cambridgeshire, England.

In November 1865, when Ann was aged 27 and unmarried, she gave birth to a son that she named Edward.

Five years later, Ann married widower William Drake at Littleport, who was at least 17 years her senior.

After William's death, Ann is shown as a widow and living alone at Burnt Chimney Drove by 1891, although her only son Edward, is living just a couple of houses away.

Ann was admitted to Fulbourn County Lunatic Asylum on 21st February 1902, where she died 14 years later in 1916. Her type of mental illness is not documented, but amongst many mental health conditions during this period, it was common for people with dementia to be treated in these kinds of institutions.
