Richard Gawthrop

Richard Gawthrop's origins are not yet known. Whilst his place of birth remains a mystery for now, tantalising details in a family Will, most likely his son's, shows knowledge of the inhabitants of the village of Low Catton in Yorkshire, England. Parish records there show a number of Gawthrops, indicating that this may well be his birthplace or the home to his cousins or siblings.
Richard married widow Mary Edwards (née Mary Gigner) of Histon, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1728 and the couple had six children together before Richard died in 1744, when the youngest child, William, was no more that two years old.
Richard had written his Will just four days before his burial, and must have had it written from his deathbed, in the presence of William Sumpter, John Turkle, and John Moors.
Mary, now in her early forties and a widow for the second time, re-married in 1746 to John Marsh (also of Histon), but three months later she followed Richard to the grave - dying in January 1747.
It is unclear as to who looked after the young orphaned family, although it is known that there were aunts and uncles in Histon by this time, and cousins in London.
