Walter James Martin was the third of the twelve children of James Martin and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Giddings of Little Downham, Cambridgeshire, England.

Walter appears to have spent his entire life in Little Downham, where on the village censuses of 1901 and 1911, he is noted as working in agriculture - first as a labourer, then as a tool man on a farm.

He married Rebecca Ann Lythell in 1901, and settled down to have a family of six children. The penultimate child (James Murfiatt Martin) sadly died when he was just 7 months old.

Walter predeceased his wife by 18 years.
