George Dewey
(1857-1939)
George Dewey was the oldest of the nine children of Joseph Dewey and his wife Elizabeth Gray of Witchford in Cambridgeshire, England.
Like most of his male siblings, George worked in agriculture - starting as a 'Ag Lab' in 1871, and becoming a Publican of The Fish & Duck pub in Wentworth by 1911. He was still doing this by 1921.
George married Adelaide Saville in 1893, but their marriage ended after 15 years when she died from acute Bronchitis in 1908.
George re-married to Elizabeth Seymour 2 years later, but their marriage was only to last 10 years before Elizabeth died aged 65.
George's third marriage was to Edith who was thirty-one years younger than him. Despite his three marriages, it appears that George and his wives never had any children.
I have yet to find George and his brother Alfred on the 1891 census, but he is in Wentworth by 1893.
George pre-deceased his third wife Edith by 36 years during December 1939. They were reunited when Edith was buried with him in 1975.
