Mary Hawkins
(1834-1844)
Mary Hawkins was the seventh of the nine children of John Hawkins and his wife Jane Dunham of Witcham, Cambridgeshire, England.
Mary's life was brief - appearing as a 7 year old girl in Witcham with her family in 1841, and being buried in 1844 aged 9 years and 9 months.
Her burial register entry reads: 'Mary Hawkins, 9yrs, 9 months. Burnt to death in the absence of her mother. Buried by Coroner's order, 12th January 1844.". Her death certificate simply reads 'accidentally burnt'.
Either way, it's a horrific tragedy, but the church appears to place the blame of the incident on the neglect by her mother Jane.
