Thomas Moden
(1878-1918)
Thomas Moden was the third of the fourteen children of labourer John Thomas Moden and his wife Charity Barrett of Haddenham and Wentworth in Cambridgeshire, England.
At the time of his birth, he was recorded as "Thomas Maden", just one of the many variants of the Moden surname.
Whilst his father worked as a farm foreman at the time of the 1911 census, Thomas is noted as 'farm horseman'.
When he was about 36 years old, the First World War began. He enlisted initially with Lincolnshire Regiment (service number 15274), and later with The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (service number 40283), where he joined their 2nd Battalion.
Service records are yet to be located, but it is noted that at the time of his death in July 1918, he had risen to the rank of Lance-Corporal.
Thomas fought his last year of war knowing that his little brother Herbert William Moden, had been killed in action.
It is not yet known whether Thomas married or had any children.
His bravery and life is commemorated in both his home village of Easton on the Hill, and in France.
