Robert appears on the 1901 Ely Census as an Errand Boy, but by the time of the 1911 Census, he's noted as a 'Whitesmith' - a term used to describe someone who works with tin and other metals.

By 1939, he had moved away from Ely, and was living in Lincolnshire, but he did not marry or raise a family of his own - making him the only Newman child not to.

In July 1942, Robert was fined £1 for causing ten cases of beer to fall from a lorry that he was driving through North Kyme, Lincolnshire, and smash in the road. He pleaded guilty to Sleaford Petty Sessions, as the lorry had inadequate restraints to stop the cases moving.

Robert died in his seventies during October 1958. As he had no immediate heirs to his estate, he left a Will that divided his estate between his surviving siblings, and the descendants of those who had pre-deceased him.
