Mary Babbage
(1817-1887)

Mary Babbage (later Mary Burnell) was the second of the six children of John Babbage and his wife Ann Norman of Holcombe Rogus, Devon, England.

She married Samuel Burnell of Combe Florey in neighbouring Somerset, and the couple settled in Somerset after their marriage and had at least eleven children.

Mary's marriage certificate shows that both her and her husband were labourers in 1839 as they both signed the marriage register with an 'X'.

By the time of the 1861 Combe Florey census, the family are living in the "poor houses, Coombe Florey" with Samuel noted as a "road contractor". The poverty must have been hard, and goes some way to explain why their son George headed to London for a new start.
