Beatrice Annie Burnell
(1881-1946)
Beatrice Annie Burnell (later Beatrice Annie Rolfe) was the oldest of the six children of George Burnell and his wife Mary Ann Barker of St. John's Wood, Middlesex, England.
When Beatrice was about 10 years old, her father died at his pub in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, England. Ten years later, at the time of the 1901 census, her mother brought the rest of the family up to Littleport, Cambridgeshire, and set up a new life and remarried to a Mr. James Smith. However, Beatrice is not with the family in 1901, and has presumably returned to London to work. This is where she eventually met and married her husband Francis John Jenner Rolfe.
Whilst Francis would go off to fight in the First World War, Beatrice looked after their three sons. By November 1917, Francis had been discharged as 'physically unfit' and returned home having been made a Sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery.
The couple both reached their 60s, and died in London, with Beatrice surviving her husband by about 2 years.
