Owen Yarrow
(1830-1916)
Owen Yarrow was the oldest of the six children of John Yarrow, and the first of the two children with his first wife Ann Whiten of Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire, England.
When Owen was about 13 years old, his mother died, leaving his father to look after him and his younger brother. His father re-married the following year to Elizabeth Jeffery.
Owen married Elizabeth Kempton, the daughter of Thomas Kempton - a baker of Ely. Together they settled down and had four sons, the oldest unfortunately died during childhood.
Owen had a varied career, that included 'Beer Retailer' (1851), 'Innkeeper and Butcher' (1861), 'Butcher' (1871), 'Butcher and Farmer, with 45 acres and employing 4' (1881), 'Farmer' (1891). In 1896, he is also noted as a Trustee of the Townsends Charity in neighbouring Stretham.
Owen became the Publican of The Three Horseshoes pub (pictured above) in Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire whilst his father's second wife Elizabeth, became the landlord of The Wheat Sheaf pub in the same village.
It was at Owen's pub, that his oldest half-brother James Yarrow, was to meet his future wife Mary Gothard who Owen had employed as a general servant during the 1860's.
By the time of the 1911, Owen appears on the census as a pensioner living with his son Frederick and his young family back at The Three Horse Shoes.
The Three Horseshoes pub still stands in the centre of the village, and has since been converted into a large private house.
